TL;DR Go straight to the Microsoft Office 2013 End-of-Life Audit

Microsoft’s productivity suite Office 2013 will be going end-of-life on the 11th of April 2023. This means that any software included in the package will no longer receive security updates, patches, or technical support. Make sure that all of your installations are on the 2016 version or higher in order to keep receiving support.

What Is Microsoft Office?

Microsoft Office is a suite of productivity software that includes a range of applications, each with a specific purpose. Office includes most of Microsoft’s well-known applications like Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. Some versions also include Publisher, OneNote, Teams, and more.

All of the Microsoft Office apps can be purchased together as the Office suite or separately, depending on your needs. You can choose to use Office as a Microsoft Office 365 subscription or to buy it as a one-time purchase. For the one-time purchase, you pay a single up-front cost to get the Office apps for a singular computer. However, these packages cannot be upgraded.

If you need to upgrade to a newer version, you will have to purchase the next major release at full price. At the time of writing, the most recent version is Microsoft Office 2021.

Microsoft Office Lifecycle

Once Microsoft Office 2013 goes end of life, there will be 3 versions that are still supported: 2016, 2019, and 2021.

Up to and including the 2019 version, Microsoft Office follows Microsoft’s Fixed Lifecycle Policy. Products under this policy receive 10 years of support. For the first 5 years, you receive mainstream support, which includes feature updates, platform updates, security updates, and functionality fixes. The 5 years after that are extended support, which only includes security updates.

Office 2021 follows the Modern Lifecycle Policy. Products under this policy receive continuous updates and support. All you have to do is make sure that your installations meet the servicing and system requirements.
