On November 7th, Google released Chrome 119 for Windows, Linux, and Mac. This release includes just 1 security fix, for a high-severity use after free issue in WebAudio. There are also the usual new features and updates listed below.
You can find more details and a complete list of all of these features on the Chrome Status page. As always, Google takes its time with putting out a larger blog post covering the most important changes however, you can find a very brief summary of the Chrome 119 release on the Chrome release page.
New features and updates
- There have been some changes to the release schedule for Chrome. From Chrome 119 onward all subsequent releases (including beta releases) will be moved forward by one week.
- WebSQL will be deprecated and removed entirely, to be replaced by SQLite. WebSQL is no longer available in Chrome 119. Access to the feature is available until Chrome 123 using the WebSQLAccess policy.
- Chrome 119 removes the temporary enterprise policy, NativeClientForceAllowed, which allowed users to continue to use Native Client.
- Chrome 119 removes the current Sanitizer API. They expect to re-implement the Sanitizer API when the proposed specification stabilizes again.
- You can now save, recall, and sync Tab Groups.
- 119 deprecates the non-standard shadowroot attribute for declarative Shadow DOM.
- The settings text now shows “delete” instead of “clear” when referring to the destruction of data.
- To improve Chrome’s stability, DevTools internal errors are now reported through Chrome’s existing crash reporting pipeline.
- Chrome for desktop will gradually skip unload events.
- Chrome 119 introduces a new PPAPISharedImagesForVideoDecoderAllowed policy to control the recent refactor for VideoDecoder APIs in PPAPI plugin.
- The Fetch standard has been updated to remove Authorization header on cross-origin redirects.
- The settings page for notification and geolocation permissions now has an additional option to explicitly enable the Permission Suggestions Service.
- For standard Safe Browsing protection users, visited URLs now have their safety checked in real-time instead of against a less frequently updated local list of unsafe URLs.
- Beginning in Chrome 119, recommended support will be removed from multiple policies that end-users currently have no way of configuring.
- Chrome 119 continues efforts to make Chrome’s handling of URL host punctuation characters standard-compliant.
- When a signed-in user long-presses on an image in Chrome on iOS, they can save it directly to Google Photos.
