Asset End-of-Life in Lifecycle Management

As a part of the asset management lifecycle, every asset will after a certain period of time reach its end of life. As manufacturers release new products, the older ones become obsolete and increasingly more expensive to support. So instead most manufacturers will end support for their older products so they can focus on the new ones.

For this reason, it is important to keep an eye out for assets that are close to going end-of-life or end-of-support. Not only will you no longer be able to receive support for these assets, but there are also a number of risks connected to working with obsolete devices.

The Risks of Unsupported Assets

As long as an OS or software is supported, manufacturers will periodically put out updates and patches to take care of vulnerabilities that are spotted. You can keep track of these using Lansweeper’s Lifecycle Insights. Assets that have reached their end of life no longer receive such security updates or patches, so any vulnerabilities that pop up will never be patched, leaving them open to exploit.

Additionally, since these assets receive no more updates or patches, their reliability will continue to decline, as well as their compatibility with new applications. Receiving support, if that is still available, will often come at an extra cost. After a while, the cost of maintaining these assets will outweigh their productivity.

Leverage your Lifecycle Data

For all these reasons, it is important to know ahead of time when an asset will be reaching its End-of-Life or End-of-Support. That way you can make the necessary decision to retire or replace old systems. Lansweeper’s Lifecycle data shows you the hardware EOL and EOS dates, as well as the status of your assets’ operating system or firmware. Using this information you can make sure that your systems are still fully supported and take action before the possibility of security risks becomes an issue.
